Bijani: Texans must repair fracture with fan base with No. 1 pick in their grasp

Sunday's outcome against Colts will determine when healing starts

(SportsRadio 610) - With the anticipation of a new head coach, a franchise quarterback and a total rebrand on the horizon, the Texans' season comes down to one final game that could determine the exit strategy to stray from the treacherous path this organization has been down.

Regardless of how they got here, they're here.

While the future of the organization doesn't simply hang on one draft choice, what was once a loyal and vibrant fan base has now become bitter, apathetic and disjointed.

The Texans (2-14-1) could reinvigorate a fan base by maintaining control of their own destiny with the top pick of every round in April's draft.

Losing to the Jeff Saturday-led Indianapolis Colts on Sunday ensures their ability to do just that.

The fracture that exists between the organization and its fan base would soon be on the mend.

It's a result of the organization's poor decisions and lack of leadership and accountability since founder Bob McNair died in November 2018.

Since, the wrong people have been entrusted with making franchise altering decisions and they have failed.

Miserably.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. The question is how will they get there and how long will it take.

The Texans have the opportunity to turn things around drastically this off-season.

There is not one team they can really use as a template and that's fine. They don't need one.

A top-two pick is already guaranteed.

The Texans enter the 2023 NFL draft with 11 total selections, will have the eighth-most money to spend in free agency.

Couple that with the fact they could find their franchise quarterback and first long term coach all in one off-season, they should catapult themselves as an organization with one of the brightest futures within the AFC South division at the very least.

The Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions and New York Giants are a few examples of organizations that have undergone drastic turnarounds in recent years.

They have all undergone significant change at key positions with marked success in a relatively short amount of time.

Granted, the right decisions must be made, the right people must be trusted to make those decisions and along the way for better or worse, accountability must be made a priority.

As both Lovie Smith and Jeff Saturday enter their regular season finale this weekend, both are likely to be coaching their last games for their respective organizations.

Both, for two very different reasons as the circumstances in which they took the job were very different but the outcome of losing, very similar.

A win for the Colts this weekend would give Texans fans something to be excited about for the first time since Dameon Pierce burst onto the scene.

Here's hoping that the tenure of one of these coaches ends just as it began this season, with Saturday getting a win on Sunday.
