Texans' offensive line takes another step back

HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) -- As J.J. Watt said after the game, you can't be picky with a win.

The Texans improved to 2-6 with Sunday's victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Their only two wins have come against the lowly AFC South foe.

Still, a win is a win.

But one of the glaring weaknesses for this team Sunday, even in victory, was the offensive line.

Deshaun Watson was often flushed out the pocket and forced to make lemonade out of the lemons on the line.

Duke Johnson, who stepped up for the injured David Johnson, had very little room to run.

The offensive line was not particularly good run blocking or in pass protection.

"Well, there were some ups and downs in it," Texans interim head coach Romeo Crennel said Monday when asked about the offensive line. "Sometimes it was good. Sometimes it was what I expect to be better. We'll work on those things that we need to work on to try to improve it all going forward.

The Texans entered Week 8 ranked 30th in pass protection and 27th in run blocking, according to Football Outsiders.

Watson was sacked twice and hit five times Sunday.

Duke Johnson was only able to gain 41 yards on 16 carries, though he did have a goal line touchdown run.

Watson, due to his instinctive scrambles out of the pocket, led the Texans in rushing with 50 yards on 10 carries, none of them designed runs.

"Like I tell the players, I said it's never perfect," Crennel said. "I want it to be perfect, but it's never perfect. We have to work to improve those areas that are deficient for us, where we let guys run through on the quarterback or we get knocked back into the line, so that the runner doesn't have any options and those kind of things.

"That's what coaching is. Coaching is, you've got to look at the things you need to fix, and then work on them and try to get them fixed."
