(SportsRadio 610) -- Romeo Crennel made it clear when he was asked about the PED suspensions of wide receiver Will Fuller and cornerback Bradley Roby.
They let the team down.
While the Texans (4-7) are unlikely to make the playoffs, they still feel like they are playing for something.
Pride. Auditions. Love of the game.
Now, the Texans are without their No. 1 receiver in Fuller, and their top corner in Roby.
“Any time you have someone on your team make a misstep, that’s disappointing, then particularly when they are key contributors,” Crennel said Wednesday. “So, then what we’ll have to do now is everybody as a group will have to tighten the belt straps and put our best foot forward and get ready for the game on Sunday.”
Crennel was also asked whether this becomes a big picture decision for the Texans.
Fuller is a free agent after this season. He’s one of only three receivers to ever play out their fifth-year option without being traded or extended.
Whoever becomes the next general manager already had a major decision to make on Fuller, and now it’s become even more complicated, given his injury history and the risk of a second positive test resulting in a 16-game suspension.
“Well, probably it does become a big picture decision,” Crennel said. “The organization will have to look at that. If I’m a part of the organization I can have some input. If I’m not, then someone else will have to do that. But generally, in this game of pro football, you look at the body of work and then include everything in the body of work and then determine how you want to use it, whether you want to use it and things like that.”
Teammates have been overwhelmingly supportive, especially for Fuller. On Fuller’s Instagram post announcing the suspension, you’ll notice players from the team and around the league expressing their support.
Deshaun Watson called it one slip up, just got popped.
“Will knows that we all love him,” Watson said. “We’re always going to have his back. Will’s my brother. The whole organization knows that, too. Make sure that we get him back for next year, especially in this organization. But that’s a whole other story and topic. But yeah, we’ve got to move on.
“We’ve got a quick five weeks that’s going to hit us this month and it’s big games. We’ve got to make sure that we’re focused and locked in on those opponents.”
