Texans reportedly targeting Brian Flores as top head coaching candidate

Shortly after news that the Houston Texans were firing head coach David Culley, there already appeared to be a frontrunner for the job.

According to Texans beat reporter Aaron Wilson, Houston is targeting former Dolphins head coach Brian Flores as their top candidate.

Flores, who was surprisingly fired by Miami on Monday, has a strong relationship with general manager Nick Caserio, per Wilson.

Caserio and Jack Easterby, the Texans’ executive vice president of football operations, both have ties to Flores from when all three were employed by the New England Patriots.

Flores served as the linebackers and safeties coach before he was hired by the Dolphins.

Flores also presents an intriguing scenario for Deshaun Watson’s future, too.

Among the reasons why Deshaun Watson was interested in being traded to the Miami Dolphins was to play for Flores. If the Texans were to hire Flores, would that be enough to convince Watson to stay? Or has there been too much damage done that he will still want out?

It is certainly a situation worth monitoring if Flores is indeed the guy in Houston.

Of course, there are plenty of other potential candidates out there, particularly other Patriots assistants that have ties to Caserio and Easterby.

Josh McDaniels, who has remained offensive coordinator in New England despite significant interest from other teams in recent years, could be another option as well as Jerod Mayo, the current linebackers coach for the Patriots who recently interviewed with the Denver Broncos.
