(SportsRadio 610) - The Texans have requested to interview Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O'Connell for their open head coaching position, multiple outlets reported Wednesday.
O'Connell spent the past two seasons as the Rams' offensive coordinator under head coach Sean McVay, and was Washington's OC in 2019 in Jay Gruden's final season there.
The Rams have posted a top 10 offense (by DVOA, which measures efficiency) in the two seasons with O'Connell as offensive coordinator, though McVay is believed to be their schematic mastermind and calls the plays.
The immediate connection to Houston is O'Connell being a third-round draft pick by the New England Patriots in 2008, when current Texans general manager Nick Caserio was in his first season as the Patriots' director of player personnel.
O'Connell played for five teams before retiring in 2012. He started coaching quarterbacks for the Browns in 2015, then special projects for the San Francisco 49ers in 2016, and quarterbacks coach for Washington in 2017.
