Texans retain RB David Johnson with contract restructure

David Johnson is returning to the Texans after agreeing to a restructured contract.

The Texans sign Johnson to a one-year deal worth up to $6 million, with $4.25 million fully guaranteed at signing.

Johnson had been owed a base salary of $7.95 million with $2.1 million guaranteed, and carried a cap figure of about $8.5 million.

Restructuring lowers the Texans' cap figure, while also giving Johnson more guaranteed money.

Johnson was the Texans lead running back when healthy in 2020, after being traded for DeAndre Hopkins from the Arizona Cardinals.

He was not especially productive until toward the end of the season, following his return from a concussion and COVID-19 exposure.

Johnson rushed for 691 yards on 147 carries and caught 33 passes for 314 receiving yards.
