HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) -- Romeo Crennel made a couple of curious decisions at the end of the first half Sunday.
The Texans were trailing the Colts 21-17 with 1:15 left in the second quarter, when the interim head coach decided to call their timeout, leaving with just one for the subsequent offensive drive.
Crennel said he was trying to "ice" Rodrigo Blankenship, who still nailed the 42-yard field goal. To his credit, Crennel admitted after the game this was probably a bad idea.
"I made a decision to try to ice the kicker, probably wasn't the best decision to make," Crennel said. "But I called the timeout on that one. Probably if we had had that timeout, we might have been able to use it maybe to get a touchdown at the end of the half."
Crennel told SportsRadio 610 he believes icing the kicker really works. There is some evidence of an icing effect at certain distances, but it is not overwhelming.
"Sometimes," Crennel said. "I mean, hey, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't work. If he had missed the field goal, then boom, I would have been a genius, but he made it, so I'm a doofus."
Then there was the decision have Ka'imi Fairbairn kick a 34-yard field goal with eight seconds left in the half, rather than take another shot at the end zone from the Colts' 16-yard line.
Crennel already mentioned not having the timeout hurt them on offense.
So by this point, he's just trying to get something on the scoreboard.
"The clock, we didn't have a whole lot of time," Crennel said. "So if you don't kick it there and something goes wrong on the play, then you don't have an opportunity to get the points on the board, so we kicked it to get the points on the board."
The Texans ultimately lost 26-20, but they had a chance to win at the end.
Houston had the ball inside the Colts' 2-yard line, 2nd and goal, but a botched snap resulted in a turnover.
The Colts then knelt to end the game.
