Texans waive kicker Matt Ammendola after missing critical field goals against Jaguars

(SportsRadio 610) - The Texans are exploring their options at kicker as they wait for Ka'imi Fairbairn to return from a quadricep injury.

Just a day after his replacement Matt Ammendola missed a pair of kicks that essentially would have won Houston the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, he was waived by the team.

Fairbairn went down earlier this month in a home win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Texans had to finish the game with backup running back Dare Ogunbowale, who has a soccer background, as their kicker.

Ammendola made a 38-yard field goal to beat the Cincinnati Bengals on the road a couple of weeks ago. But he missed field goal attempts of 50 and 58 yards, the last of which would have tied the game and potentially sent the game to overtime.

KPRC2's Aaron Wilson reports the Texans worked out Brett Maher with the option of bringing back Ammendola to the practice squad. Fairbairn is eligible to return from injured reserve after the Denver Broncos game this upcoming Sunday.
