HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) -- Tight end Jordan Thomas was among 16 players waived from the Texans’ active roster on Saturday.
Thomas is entering his third season and was part of a crowded tight end position group vying for a spot on the team. He showed potential in his rookie season, starting in 10 games and grabbing four touchdown catches.
Thomas’ second season, however, was held back by injury. He played in just five games after missing the first 10 games of the season with a rib injury sustained in the preseason.
Thomas had just one catch in 2019. Texans head coach and general manager Bill O’Brien said on Aug. 21 that Thomas was in shape and having a good training camp.
Quarterback Deshaun Watson also spoke about how at 6’6”, 255 pounds with speed, Thomas could play outside, inside, block, or run short, intermediate or long routes.
“He’s been working, you can tell,” Watson said Aug. 13. “He came back ready and prepared for this camp. He’s ready to go. Whenever he gets his opportunity, I’m definitely going to give him a shot. He’s been capitalizing on those.”
Waiving Thomas leaves a tight end group led by veteran Darren Fells, Jordan Akins, and second-year player Kahale Warring.
Other notable cuts for the Texans on Saturday included long snapper Jon Weeks, the longest tenured player on the team, and defensive lineman Angelo Blackson, who was a key special teams player last season and figured to see time on the line as well.
