Texans trade RB Cam Akers to Vikings

The Texans feel good enough about their running back room to trade Cam Akers to the Minnesota Vikings.

Texans general manager Nick Caserio joined Payne and Pendergast on Wednesday morning and said the team is in a good spot with Joe Mixon, Dameon Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale at the top. It would have likely meant limited action for Akers going forward, if the other three players remain healthy.

"He made progress, he improved, he got better and he helped us win some games," Caserio said of Akers. "I would say in that particular situation this is more of a case of us just kind of managing the roster here a little bit. We feel we have a pretty good group there at running back. Cam has helped us a little bit as well. We feel like we're in a pretty good spot with DP, Joe and Dare. ...

"There was an opportunity that kind of matched up. Minnesota had reached out and they were kind of in a position where they were looking to potentially add some depth (at running back). ... At some point, it's just us managing the roster and trying to make a decision that we feel is in everybody's best interest. But certainly grateful that Cam was here."

The Vikings acquired Akers for the second time in 12 months, but this time in exchange for conditional draft choices in 2026.
