Deshaun Watson's QB coach clarifies 'Walmart receivers' comment

HOUSTON (SportsRadio 610) - Deshaun Watson's personal quarterback coach joined Clint Stoerner & The Show Tuesday to clarify the critical comments he made on a recent podcast about the Texans receivers Watson played threw to in 2020.

"[People] might have forgot that his last year in Houston, when he played, he was carrying like three guys who could have been working at your local Walmart at the receiver position and he went absolutely berserk," Quincy Avery said recently on the Ryen Russillo Podcast, via the Houston Chronicle. "If he gets on a team with any sort of talent around him, somebody's going to have to really watch out."

Avery added that he believes teams should be put on notice with how much better Watson has gotten in his time away from the field.

"Deshaun is throwing the ball better than I think I've ever seen him throw a football," Avery said. "And, I'm not just saying this, but he's super healthy, he's super focused, he's super locked in. When it comes to like putting on his cleats, walking on a field, Sunday at one o'clock? The first time that he does that, I think that people are going to be reminded very, very quickly that Deshaun Watson is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL."

While joining SportsRadio 610 on Tuesday, Avery attempted to clarify his comments (listen starting at 24:45).

"I think it was silly, the context with which it was taken. I wasn't talking about the starting receivers. Maybe, I shouldn't have said guys that could work at Walmart," Avery said. … "I was just trying to say that no matter who the receiving group is, Deshaun Watson is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL."

It still remains to be seen where Watson will play next season; if he does at all. At the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on Tuesday, Texans general manager Nick Caserio didn't have much of an update on the Watson trade front.

"We're day to day handling that situation. My philosophy is to do what's best for the Houston Texans organization, and we will continue that moving forward."

Deshaun Watson still faces 22 civil lawsuits against him alleging sexual misconduct or assault, but that will not preclude teams from pursuing him.

According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, multiple teams are willing to trade for Watson, as long as his criminal situation is resolved.

Watson is still awaiting a decision from a grand jury on whether or not he will be charged with any crimes, which his attorney, Rusty Hardin, expects to be made by April 1.
