Zack Greinke has been scratched from Friday night's start against the Oakland Athletics and placed on the 10-day injured list with neck soreness, the team announced Friday afternoon.
Brandon Bielak will start in Greinke's place.
Greinke’s IL stint is retroactive to Tuesday, Sept. 21. Right-hander Peter Solomon has been recalled from Triple A Sugar Land to replace Greinke on the Major League active roster.
"He just was complaining about the neck soreness for a couple of days. He tried to go out and throw and he just couldn't do it," Baker said Friday. "For the need of us to have an arm, we couldn't wait to see if it was going to come back into shape. So, we had to make the move."
Baker said he doesn't believe the soreness bothered Greinke in his last start, or at least he didn't mention it.
"He doesn't complain much," Baker said.
Bielak’s last appearance was a start on Sept. 17 against the Arizona Diamondbacks, when he gave up three hits, struck out six, walked two and no earned runs over 2.2 innings on 55 pitches. Bielak is 3-3 in 27 appearances, which includes one start, with a 4.21 ERA and one save.
On April 4 at Oakland, Bielak hurled 4.2 hitless, scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory in a 9-2 Astros win.
