The Yankees won’t have DJ LeMahieu for Tuesday’s Wild Card Game, but the Red Sox will also be missing a key bat from their lineup.
Boston released its 26-man roster on Tuesday morning, and J.D. Martinez was not on it, as he will be unable to go after spraining his ankle when he tripped over second base while jogging to his place in the outfield during Sunday’s regular season finale in Washington.
Martinez, one of the team’s most prolific power bats, will be a glaring absence for the Red Sox offense, especially given his history against Yankees starter Gerrit Cole. In 25 career at-bats, Martinez has two home runs and a .935 OPS against the Yankee ace.
With Martinez out, the Red Sox could slide Kyle Schwarber into the DH role and move either Bobby Dalbec or Travis Shaw to first base.
On the season, Martinez his 28 home runs with an .867 OPS in what was his fourth All-Star season.
