Fernando Tatis Jr. was placed on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday with left shoulder inflammation, one day after a scary scene at Petco Park.
The 22-year-old shortstop left Monday night’s game against the San Francisco Giants in the third inning after falling to the ground after a swing and grabbing his left arm in pain.
It did not look good for Tatis, but Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller said the injury will not require surgery and that the club is hopeful rest and rehab can get Tatis back onto the field.
Tatis had left a spring training game earlier this year with soreness before returning two days later. He continued receiving treatment on his shoulder daily.
The Padres had signed Tatis to a 14-year, $340 million contract extension back in February after he catapulted the Padres to a playoff run in the shortened 2020 season.
