The Rangers and New York Mets have agreed to a trade to bring three-time CY Young Award winner Max Scherzer to Texas. The deal was contingent on Scherzer waiving his no-trade clause, which he has done, according to Andy Martino of SNY.

The deal is not yet complete, as financial hurdles remain. Scherzer is owed around $15 million for the rest of the 2023 season and can opt out of the final year of his contract in 2024 worth $43.3 million.

The package going to the Mets in exchange for right-hander is unknown.

The AL West-leading Rangers have sought a frontline starter to add to the rotation ever since their own ace, Jacob deGrom, went down with a season-ending elbow injury in April after just six starts. Scherzer fits that bill.

Scherzer, who just turned 39 this week, has struggled this season, posting a 4.01 ERA in 107 2/3 innings. But he holds a career 3.15 ERA spanning 16 seasons. In addition to winning three Cy Young awards, Scherzer is an eight-time All-Star and helped lead the Nationals to their first World Series championship in 2019.

Scherzer has been just as good in the postseason, pitching to a 3.58 ERA in 27 appearances (22 starts).
