The Carlos Correa saga continues, with the latest news coming courtesy of Audacy MLB insider Jon Heyman and his New York Post teammate, Mike Puma: Correa has no interest in restructuring his deal with the Mets after the Amazins, like the Giants, had questions about his physical.
Reportedly, a lower right leg injury Correa suffered in the minors in 2014 is the hang-up that the Giants had, and now the Mets also have after agreeing to a deal once San Francisco backed out.
Heyman reported on Christmas Day that there is still optimism the two sides will come to a deal, potentially with a similar injury disclaimed that Scott Boras worked out with the Red Sox when they signed J.D. Martinez five years ago.
However, Puma wrote Monday that “the belief is Correa, whose strong preference is to play for the Mets, isn’t open to restructuring the length or financial terms of the contract” and that “at least three teams have been in contact with Correa’s camp in recent days, but Correa remains committed for now to trying to finalize his deal with the Mets.”
Correa and the Mets agreed to a 12-year, $315 million deal in the middle of the night last week, hours after the Giants backed out of the 13-year, $350 million deal they had offered because of concerns over that leg injury.
The other complication is that Steve Cohen had said shortly after the signing that “we needed one more thing, and (Correa) was it,” so it seems neither side has much leverage – the Mets because Boras and Correa can claim some kind of tampering, the player because now two teams have balked at the same medicals.
However, given the news of “at least three teams” having interest if this deal falls through, fans are looking for any potential Easter eggs or bread crumbs for Correa’s next move – including reading into a photo Correa posted on his Instagram on Christmas Day of him and his child in matching onesies, a photo that just so happened to have YES Network’s Yankees Hot Stove on the TV in the background.
