Mavericks trade Luka Dončić to Lakers for Anthony Davis In three way deal

The Dallas Mavericks have made a blockbuster trade that has changed the future of the franchise forever.

According to reports from ESPN's Shams Charania, the Mavericks are trading superstar Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first round pick as part of a three way deal.

Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris are also heading to L.A. with Dončić, while the Utah Jazz will be receiving Jalen Hood-Schifino, a 2025 Clippers second round pick, and a 2025 Mavericks second round pick.

Mavs GM Nico Harrison told ESPN that the move was made due to the team wanting to improve their defense. He also said that the 31-year-old Davis gives them a better chance to win a championship than Dončić, who is one of the greatest players in modern NBA history.

“I believe that defense wins championships,” Harrison told ESPN. “I believe that getting an All-Defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive mindset gives us a better chance. We’re built to win now and in the future.”

Since being drafted by the mavericks in 2018, Dončić is a five-time All-Star, five-time NBA All-First Team performer, rookie of the year winner and NBA scoring champion.

He has averaged 28.6 points, 8.7 rebounds and 8.3 assists per game over that time, and led the Mavs to an NBA Finals appearance last season.
