DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - University of Texas head coach Shaka Smart will reportedly leave the program to accept the recently vacated job with the Marquette Golden Eagles.
Smart leaves the Longhorns after six seasons, following a disappointing first round loss to Abilene Christian in the NCAA Tournament to end to their 2020 season.
"I just really feel for our guys right now because up until tonight, we had a phenomenal season, and this obviously isn't the way that any of us envisioned it ending," Smart said following the loss. "But this is one of the facts of the NCAA Tournament is one team gets to stay and one team goes home.''
Smart ends his time at Texas with a mixed record, finishing with an overall record of 109-86 and a 52-56 mark in the Big 12 conference, and leading the Longhorns to three NCAA tournaments, but failing to advance past the first round a single time.
Smart also led the Longhorns to an NIT Championship, and the school's first-ever Big 12 Tournament title win.
Texas will now turn its attention to their search for a new head coach, with the school reportedly ready to put a "full court press" on Texas Tech's Chris Beard, with additional interest in Brooklyn Nets assistant, Royal Ivey
