Jimmy Garoppolo may have a new team by the time the season starts.

While the San Francisco 49ers were expected to trade the 30-year-old veteran early this offseason, surgery on his right shoulder derailed those plans as uncertainty clouded his trade value.

But if Garoppolo gets the all-clear on his shoulder in late-June or early July, as expected, the Niners will immediately again seek a trade partner for the quarterback, according to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner.

Wagoner added that it is hard to envision a scenario in which Garoppolo is on the 49ers roster by Week 1. If he is, it would most definitely not be with his current $26.95 million cap hit.

Second-year quarterback Trey Lance, who appeared in six games last year as a rookie and started two while Garoppolo was hurt, is waiting in the wings to become the team’s starting quarterback.

Lance has reportedly been assured he will be the Niners starting quarterback next season, although he comes with question marks as well.

There have been recent reports that the 49ers have been underwhelmed with Lance.

The team can still develop the first-round pick into a more formidable quarterback, a storyline that will certainly be watched closely throughout the summer and 2022 season.

Meanwhile, as for the Deebo Samuel situation, Wagoner added the 49ers are “cautiously optimistic” they can mend that relationship.
