PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – It was a winding road, maybe more like a rollercoaster, but Steelers add a future Hall of Fame quarterback to lead them in 2025. As reported by several outlets Thursday from Gerry Dulac at the Post-Gazette to the NFL Network, Aaron Rodgers informed the Steelers he will fly to Pittsburgh on Friday and sign before next week’s minicamp.

It’s been speculated for months and took time to finish, but Aaron Rodgers will be the team’s starting quarterback in 2025.

Rodgers visited with Mike Tomlin, coaches and front office staff at the Steelers South Side facility March 21 for reportedly around six hours.

For awhile it seemed down to the Giants, Vikings and Steelers. Then Minnesota reaffirmed its faith publicly in rookie quarterback JJ McCarthy to be their starter this season. The Steelers signed Mason Rudolph as insurance and drafted Will Howard in the sixth round and then the Giants added Jameis Winston and drafted Jaxson Dart in the first round. It turned into Steelers or no one and it’s the Steelers.

Rodgers will turn 42 in December, to give you an idea how long he’s been in the league, Central Catholic High School graduate Marc Bulger led the NFL in passing yards a game and Marvin Harrison, Senior was one of the best receivers his rookie season. Ty Law led the league in interceptions and Michael Strahan in tackles for loss.

The team had an offer out to Justin Fields, but he decided to sign with a Jets team that Rodgers quarterbacked last year to five wins. It wasn’t all on Rodgers, he threw for 3,897 yards with 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He threw for 274 yards and four touchdowns in a win over Miami in the final game of the season.

Rodgers finished 24th in NFL quarterback rating last year, behind Fields and Russell Wilson, but he was seventh in touchdown passes.

ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini said on the Pomp and Joe Show that Rodgers is highly motivated and while he does bring drama, it’s not that he’s hated bad his teammates. He said Rodgers is good person. He’s a tough competitor and mostly liked in a locker room. Last year Cimini thought he was vintage Rodgers in about half of the games and looked old in the other half. He believes the Achilles injury has impacted his game, especially his ability to slide in the pocket.

In 2020 and 2021 with Green Bay, Rodgers led the NFL in quarterback rating and won a combined 26 games. In ’20 he completed 70.7% of his passes leading the league in that stat and touchdown passes, 48.

What of that Rodgers is left? The Steelers put their season on him finding that form.
