As the NFL preseason winds down, the San Francisco 49ers have yet to officially name a starting quarterback for Week 1.
Perhaps it is because they may be considering a QB by committee approach.
During Sunday’s preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders, Jimmy Garoppolo started the game but rookie Trey Lance rotated in during each of Garoppolo’s series for various plays.
Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan had hinted at this possibility before and teased that there could be more if it come the regular season.

“We’ve got two guys who can play and we’ve been doing it in practice a little bit,” Shanahan said, per 49ers WebZone. “[We] wanted to do it out there in the game, and it’s always going to be an option.”
Shanahan added that the rotations were not planned, but rather situational.
“I was just doing it mainly off impulse and whatever the down and distance felt like, what we wanted to call,” he said. “Those guys seemed like they handled it good. I’ll meet with it tomorrow and watch it al with them, which I’m looking forward to, but today I thought it was good.”
Both Garoppolo and Lance appeared to buy into the idea of working a rotation and running back Raheem Mostert even noticed a difference whenever the more mobile Lance entered the game.
“[The Raiders] were definitely eyeing Trey,” Mostert said. “That just opened the game for me and other running backs and stuff like that, even receivers — just the dynamic of everybody. Kyle’s doing a great job with both of them. I’m just excited to see how thing plays out in the season. It’s nice, though.”
