Even the incomplete passes Patrick Mahomes throws are jaw-dropping.
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback had quite possibly the worst statistical game of his career in Super Bowl LV, but there were a couple of moments where Mahomes made incredible throws after appearing dead in the water that left even the Buccaneers sideline in awe.
NFL Films released audio from the Bucs sideline on Tuesday, which captured wide receivers Chris Godwin and Mike Evans amazed at Mahomes’ ability to make accurate throws while being brought to the ground on back-to-back plays at the start of the fourth quarter.
On a third-and-9 from the Tampa Bay 11, Mahomes was scrambling and backpedaling to his left when Shaquil Barrett grabbed the quarterback and spun him around twice before Mahomes fired the ball to the back corner of the end zone as he went to the ground.
Mahomes’ pass was tipped and just out of the reach from connecting with Byron Pringle.
“How did he – yo … Yo, yo, yo, he’s a magician,” Godwin said while watching the play unfold. “I’m convinced.”
When someone asked who, Godwin explained, “Number 15. The one that just be spinning out of nowhere and throw the ball backwards, with a left hand.”
Godwin may have been exaggerating a bit, but on the very next play Mahomes did it again. This time, he was tripped up in the backfield by Wlliam Gholston while running to his right on a fourth down play where he had to make a throw.
As Mahomes was falling to the ground in mid-air, he fired the ball to the end zone where it went through Darrell Williams’ hands and off his helmet for an incomplete pass and turnover on downs.
“How did he do that?” Godwin asked his teammates on the bench.
“I don’t know,” Evans, who was also heard saying Mahomes is “unbelievable” earlier on the sideline, responded.
“Bro, he’s a magician,” Godwin said again. “I don’t know how he does that.”
The only thing Mahomes could not pull out of his bag of tricks was a win, though.
While it is easy to be impressed by Mahomes when you’re up 31-9 against him, it just goes to show that even on his worst day, he is still quite an act to watch.
