Not only are the Steelers off to the franchise’s best start since 1978, but head coach Mike Tomlin also made history on Sunday.

With Pittsburgh’s 28-24 win over the Baltimore Ravens, Tomlin recorded his 140th career regular season win, which broke a tie with Hall of Fame head coach Tony Dungy for the most wins by a Black head coach in NFL history.

Tomlin, 48, coincidentally enough got his start in the NFL as a defensive backs coach under Dungy for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2001 – Dungy’s final season in Tampa before becoming the Indianapolis Colts head coach.

The Steelers head coach is in his 14th season with Pittsburgh – his first head coaching gig – and is also the third third-longest tenured head coach in the NFL behind Bill Belichick and Sean Payton. He has a career record of 140-74-1, plus an 8-7 postseason record which includes a Super Bowl title.

The victory also moves Tomlin into 22nd on the all-time coaching wins list – one ahead of Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll and three behind Hall of Famer Marv Levy.

It seems inevitable that Tomlin will pass his predecessor, Bill Cowher, who has 149 career wins. Whether or not that happens this season is dependent on if the Steelers can run the table and finish 16-0.
