Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has been in limbo while awaiting a trade out of Cleveland, but a new report suggests things could be picking up.
The Seahawks, long rumored to be a potential landing spot for Mayfield, are said to still have a "high level of interest" in the former No. 1 overall draft pick, according to Josina Anderson of CBS Sports.
Per Anderson, Seattle is even open to extending Mayfield's contract, which is set to expire after next season. The former Oklahoma Sooners star will be playing the upcoming season on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract after it was previously exercised by the Browns.
The Seahawks seem to be doing their homework on Mayfield, Anderson added.
I also know that the process of collecting information and insights into Mayfield is still ongoing.
The Seahawks were left without a franchise quarterback after they unloaded Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos. Unproven signal-caller Drew Lock and journeyman Geno Smith were at the top of the depth chart.
The Seahawks were also floated as a possible landing spot for the return of former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Head coach Pete Carroll revealed he'd spoken about it with Kaepernick, but Carroll later seemed to back off the idea.
The Browns meanwhile have seemingly struggled to find a trade partner for Mayfield, with his hefty salary in particular seen as a probable obstacle. The first overall pick in 2018, Mayfield requested a trade during the Browns' acquisition of Deshaun Watson. He later said he felt the Browns had misled him about their plan to pursue Watson, while the Browns maintained they were transparent.
The Carolina Panthers have also reportedly engaged the Browns in trade talks for the 27-year-old Texas native.
