The ongoing beef between Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau has captivated most golf fans and helped grow the game. But former Masters champion Patrick Reed isn't exactly keen on the stars' rivalry.
"On the golf course, yes, [it's good for game], for sure. Off the golf course, I'd go about it a different way," Reed told The DA Show on Wednesday. "I know I've ruffled feathers before and I know how it can go. So, there's some things there that are playful banter, and some things that probably shouldn't be said or shouldn't be done. When it comes down to rivalries, especially in golf and in sports, a lot of that needs to be done on the golf course, with how you're playing, even if it's just little jabs here and there off the golf course about little things here and there. That's fine.
"There's some things I'd probably go about a little different way, but I'm glad I'm just not in one of those situations right now, having to go back and forth. But at the end of the day, you have two great golfers that are going out and going at it not only on the golf course, but off the golf course. As long as it doesn't take away from what they're trying to do on the golf course and the brand of the PGA Tour, then that's up for them to decide and up for the PGA Tour to make that decision."
The Koepka-DeChambeau feud dates back a few years. In August 2019, Koepka complained about DeChambeau's slow pace of play, and in January 2020, DeChambeau mocked Koepka's physique and photos from an ESPN Body Issue magazine.
But the rift reached new heights last month. Following the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island in late May, an unaired video clip from a post-round interview between Koepka and the Golf Channel leaked online, showing Koepka rolling his eyes at a nearby DeChambeau and cursing under his breath.
"There's a line there of playful banter and a rivalry back and forth and then crossing that line," Reed said. "It's just like for fans. When you're out there, you going back and forth and having playful banter with fans is great for the game of golf. But once you cross that line -- whether it's disrespect or things that shouldn't be said where it could affect not just that person, but others as well -- that's when you have that issue. That's the line that you just can't cross.
"I think every single player has crossed that line at some point. And you just need to learn from it and hopefully it doesn't happen again. There's been some things that have kind of gone back and forth, and with that situation, have crossed too many times, I feel like. We'll see how it all unfolds..."
Koepka and DeChambeau happened to be on opposite ends of the U.S. Open leaderboard last weekend. Koepka finished tied for the fourth with a final round 2-under 69, while DeChambeau finished tied for 26th with a 6-over 77.
Both players will participate in this week's Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut.
