Sports Top fantasy football waiver wire pickups for Week 14

Top fantasy football waiver wire pickups for Week 14

75756A5E-120A-4932-810C-2FD980DB785E
By Jordan Cohn, Audacy

It's slim pickings season on the fantasy football waiver wire. If you expected a lot of breakout performances that would translate into fantasy football production heading into Week 14, you're probably a little bit new to the game.

For as much turnover there can be early in the season, such change typically doesn't occur with 75 percent of the games played, the playoff picture in relatively clear focus, and the fantasy football playoff picture fully developed. The rosters that have made it probably don't need too much help.

But that's not to say it's impossible for a waiver wire pickup to be useful at this point in the season, especially when using strategy to your advantage regarding matchups. Maybe you drop a season-long stash that never quite developed for a defense to prepare for a good matchup down the road. Maybe you continue your season-long QB streaming strategy and get ahead by a couple of weeks.

Or maybe you add one of these guys who could provide your roster with a quick boost if you need it, like rosters who may have been riding Washington Football Team star running back Antonio Gibson before a toe injury potentially derailed the rest of his rookie campaign. And that's where this list will come in handy.

The below names are owned in fewer than half of all fantasy leagues and should be added now if you need help with that particular position.

Recycled from last week

T.Y. Hilton, Indianapolis Colts
Yahoo: 45% owned | ESPN: 47% owned

I recommended Hilton in Week 13, and he still hasn't been picked up enough to reach the 50 percent mark. After an 11-catch, 110-yard performance in Week 13, though, I'm guessing a lot of fantasy owners wish they had picked him up and will do so for Week 14 and beyond.

Keke Coutee, Houston Texans

Coutee was also on last week's list, and he played a huge role to help fill the voids of Will Fuller and Kenny Stills in the Houston offense, grabbing nine balls for 141 yards against a stingy Colts defense. A team desperate for FLEX appeal could look Coutee's way going forward.

Adrian Peterson, Detroit Lions

Yahoo: 48% owned | ESPN: 36% owned

One of the greatest running backs of all time is still doing his thing even at age 35. Though he hasn't reached more than 60 yards in either of the past two weeks, he's been good for two touchdowns in each effort. The goal-line plunge is his specialty, and with D'Andre Swift's health status up in the air, it's worth picking up Peterson with a friendly matchup against the Packers on the schedule for Week 14.

Ty Johnson, New York Jets

Yahoo: 2% owned | ESPN: 0% owned

If you're considering Ty Johnson with a waiver wire pickup, you must be seriously desperate at the running back position — which isn't all too unheard of, considering health issues plaguing Swift, Gibson, Joe Mixon, Clyde Edwards-Helaire and others.

And if you're in the playoffs and you're desperate enough for Ty Johnson, you also must be one heck of a savvy fantasy football manager to have made it to the postseason with such a rag tag running back crew. But Johnson ran for 104 yards and a score in Week 13 in relief of an injured Frank Gore, and a good matchup against the Seahawks awaits Johnson in Week 14. If you need a running back, you can do much worse.

Julian Edelman, New England Patriots

Yahoo: 25% owned | ESPN: 32% owned

Remember him? In a season of Jakobi Meyers and Damiere Byrd's wild inconsistency in the fantasy football world, Julian Edelman has been absent since October following knee issues and landing on the COVID-19/Reserve list. But ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that he fully intends to play and is a couple of weeks away from game action, meaning he could be a great sneaky stash right now that wouldn't take up a roster spot — plug him into your IR space — and could return for a contending Patriots team that plays against the Dolphins in Week 15 to get him up to speed - don't start him here - and the Jets in Week 16 in your fantasy football championships. Worth a shot on a barren waiver wire? I'd definitely say so.

Jalen Reagor, Philadelphia Eagles

Yahoo: 22% owned | ESPN: 18% owned

The non-existent Eagles offense might have found some life once Jalen Hurts entered the game for Carson Wentz, and Hurts will be the starter in Week 14 against the Saints. What does this mean for the Eagles offense? I truly have no idea. But after watching 12 weeks of miserable football under Carson Wentz, it really can't be much worse.

If Hurts and Reagor have a real Jalen-to-Jalen connection, though, it's going to be worth having on your team and not on another. The pair linked up on one deep ball in limited time together in Week 13, so hopefully that's a good sign for things to come.

Anthony Firkser, Tennessee Titans

Yahoo: 9% owned | ESPN: 5% owned

If Jonnu Smith doesn't play in Week 14, we could have a rare dependable streaming option in Anthony Firkser. In the two games where Firkser has started in replace of an injured Smith, he's gone for 16 catches, 164 yards and a touchdown. Though it's a small sample size of starting production, it's a trend that we really like, especially with a soft Jacksonville defense on the horizon.

Logan Thomas, Washington Football Team

Yahoo: 40% owned | ESPN: 25% owned

Thomas has shown up on this list a few times this season, and I've pointed to his relatively consistent workload. It hasn't decreased at any point in the season — he's had at least four targets in every game — and exploded against the Steelers for nine catches, 98 yards and a touchdown in Week 13.

Don't expect that type of production, but expect one of the highest floors at the position to continue. He now has more targets than guys like Hayden Hurst, Mike Gesicki, Rob Gronkowski and several other tight ends with a higher ownership percentage.
