A longtime Georgia leader is stepping down, new trails are opening across Atlanta, and the weekend is packed with events for residents across the metro area.
Sonny Perdue announced plans to retire as chancellor of the University System of Georgia, capping more than 40 years in public service. Perdue, who also served as Georgia’s governor, will remain in his role until a nationwide search is completed to find his successor.
In Atlanta, outdoor enthusiasts have something new to explore. A 2.5-mile stretch of the Atlanta BeltLine has officially opened, connecting the Krog Street Tunnel to Boulevard Southeast. The expansion is part of a broader effort to complete 18 miles of the BeltLine ahead of the 2026 World Cup, creating more space for walking, running and cycling.
Looking ahead to the weekend, metro Atlanta is offering a wide range of activities, including several free options. Record Store Day will be celebrated at local shops across the area, while the Big Shanty Festival returns to Kennesaw with arts, crafts and entertainment. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is also hosting a free concert at Piedmont Park on Sunday evening.
In addition, a portion of Peachtree Street will be closed to vehicles Sunday afternoon, giving residents space to walk, bike and enjoy community activities.
With leadership changes, city improvements and a busy weekend ahead, there’s plenty happening across the region.
