Crocheting for a Cause: Student honors her Mother's memory with recycled blankets
Lamar Co HS students crochet blankets from recycled bags to help the homeless, honoring a student's late mother. The project fosters community and kindness.
Lamar County High School in Barnesville, Georgia, has been recognized for its inspiring community service project, "Crocheting for a Cause." Led by student Tessa, this initiative honors the memory of her late mother by creating unique, recycled blankets for the homeless.
Inspired by her mother's passion for crocheting, Tessa began repurposing plastic grocery bags into cozy blankets. She quickly gained support from her teacher, Ms. Summer Shurling, and the entire school community. Over 35 students joined the cause, learning the art of crocheting and contributing to a meaningful project.
These recycled blankets offer numerous benefits to those in need. They are water-resistant, mold-resistant, and durable, providing warmth and protection from the elements. By preventing the spread of illness and attracting pests, these blankets improve the overall health and well-being of the homeless community.

Tessa's dedication to her mother's legacy and her desire to make a positive impact have transformed this project into a powerful force for good. Through "Crocheting for a Cause," students are not only honing their skills but also developing a sense of empathy and compassion for others.
Lamar County High School's recognition as a top five finalist in the Delta Community Credit Union $15,000 Give Back Giveaway is a testament to the impact of their efforts. The $1,000 prize will further support their mission of creating a better future for their community.
