Nelly was really the first successful rapper out of St. Louis. Nelly initially was part of a musical group when first started gaining recognition. He was originally signed to St. Lunatics in 1999 with Universal Records, but Universal decided he was meant for more and removed him from the group to start a solo career.

The song was written about the world post September 11, 2001. Black Eyed Peas members Ron Fair and Will.I.Am wrote the socially conscious lyrics and collaborated with Justin Timberlake on the chorus. Justin was able to come up with the chorus after hearing what Ron Fair and Will.I.Am came up with over the phone. The group shared they remember hearing about the events of September 11 as they were happening and just remember asking themselves, "Where is the love?"
