The first trailer for the film adaptation of Broadway musical “Dear Evan Hansen” has been released.
Ben Platt, 27, reprises his role as the titular teen character, which he originated on Broadway in 2016.
Directed by Stephen Chbosky (The Perks of Being A Wallflower), the film’s star-studded cast features Julianne Moore, Amy Adams, Kaitlyn Dever, Amandla Stenberg and Danny Pino.
The story centers around Evan Hansen, a high school student with social anxiety who begins to write letters to himself on advice from his therapist. When one of those letters is found in the pocket of a classmate who dies by suicide, the family believes the note is a suicide letter.
For his portrayal of Hansen, Platt won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. The performance also earned him a GRAMMY for Best Musical Theater Album and a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program, after singing “You Will Be Found” on the “Today” show.
For those keeping score, Platt is an Academy Award away from joining the list of EGOT recipients, those who have secured Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony wins.
The film adaptation of “Dear Evan Hansen” was one of the first major studio films to begin production during the COVID-19 pandemic, reported Rolling Stone.
Last year, Platt shared his trepidation if the project would actually move forward.
"Some of us are getting a little long in the tooth, so I think it's, like, kind of a now or never kind of thing," Platt said during an appearance on “The Tonight Show” in June. "But I'm hopeful that it can come together and we can find this way to do it.”
“Dear Evan Hansen” is set to hit theaters on September 24.
