After the Brewers blew a 9th inning lead earlier in the evening, the Padres defeated the White Sox 5-2, reducing their magic number to clinch a wild card spot to 1. This game got off on the wrong foot, when Elvis Andrus hit a home run on the first pitch of the game off of Mike Clevinger. But Juan Soto would return the favor in the bottom half of the frame, evening the game at 1. Mike Clevinger settled down, allowing just that 1st inning run over 6 innings. Jake Cronenworth broke the 1-1 tie in the 6th inning with a 2-run blast to right field. Austin Nola added an RBI-single in the 6th as well, giving the Padres a 4-1 lead. Manny Machado's 32nd home run of the season, a solo shot, gave the Padres a 5-1 lead in the 7th, and that was all the offense would need, as the White Sox were only able to add another run in the 8th. The Padres will have an opportunity to clinch a playoff berth at home on Sunday with Blake Snell on the mound.
