Texans GM Nick Caserio acknowledges 'the clock is ticking' on his own job status

(SportsRadio 610) - While Texans chairman and CEO Cal McNair expressed confidence in general manager Nick Caserio, who on Monday he referred to as "an elite talent evaluator," it was not lost on anyone that time is no longer on the GM's side when it comes to his own evaluation.

The Texans are searching for their third head coach in as many seasons under Caserio, their fourth in as many seasons dating back to Bill O'Brien in 2020.

After cycling through David Culley and Lovie Smith the past two seasons, the Texans have only gone backward, winning four games in consecutive years before going 3-13-1 in 2022.

The Texans have a special opportunity with the No. 2 overall pick, five picks in the first three rounds and 11 total selections that could turn into more or less, depending on Caserio's appetite for trading.

They also have more salary cap space and should be able to attract more free agents to Houston, along with hiring a new head coach.

But at some point there has to be results. There needs to be evidence this is working, or that the people in charge have a clue of what they are doing.

"I would say just candidly and honestly as we work through this process and as if there's candidates, if they feel that whether or not in my position that I'm worthwhile to be in my position, if ultimately the best thing for the organization is for me not to be in that position, then I have to respect that and acknowledge that," Caserio said. "I'm certainly not above and beyond anything else. What I've tried to do is just be consistent on a year-to-year basis, try to do what I believe is in the best interest of our team on a year-to-year basis, our organization.

"And eventually at some point, if somebody feels that's not the direction we need to go, I'll respect that and acknowledge that. That's my response. The only thing I can do is do the best job that I can, try to make the decisions that I feel make the most sense, and that's what I'm committed to doing."

Caserio when asked about how to address the instability and credibility issues with potential coaching candidates said they can only be honest and solicit their feedback. It's possible they will have some tough conversations in the coming days and weeks.

The reality for Caserio right now is the McNair family has extended him some grace he hasn't necessarily earned through performance thus far, especially considering how quickly they were willing to punt on the coaches.

"Nothing is guaranteed. All we're guaranteed is an opportunity," Caserio said "I have a responsibility, and I understand, let's be real, let's be honest, the clock is ticking. Time is short, but that's okay. We work in a high-pressure environment. The expectations are high, and it's about performance. If I don't do my job well enough, and quite frankly, some probably think I haven't done my job well enough at this point, and that's more than fair. At some point decisions will have to be made, and the only thing I can do is make a commitment to our building, to our ownership group, to our team, to our organization that we're going to do everything we can to try to come up with a better result."
