Before backup quarterback Trey Lance and the Dallas Cowboys took the field on a Saturday evening in Sin City, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones spoke glowingly about Lance in a visit with sideline reporter Kristi Scales on the pregame show on 105.3 The Fan.
"He's a great athlete. If we were really trying to win a game during the season, there’d be a different game plan. And you'd use his legs a lot," Jones said. You're gonna see Trey tonight working out of the pocket, working on his footwork. … I can see why San Francisco gave three ones to draft him."
Lance has struggled with accuracy throughout training camp and Dallas' preseason-opening loss to the Los Angeles Rams. And while he wasn't perfect on Saturday, he was much improved.
Lance was 15-23 for 151 yards and two total touchdowns, with one coming on a beautiful pass to the corner of the end zone to rookie Ryan Flournoy, and the other coming on a designed run in the final minutes of the fourth quarter.
Lance also added 34 yards on the ground, including a 20-yard run that set up a Brandon Aubrey 66-yard field goal to end the first half.
Lance will have one final opportunity to make his case for the No. 2 job behind Dak Prescott when the Cowboys take on the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday afternoon at AT&T Stadium.
