Alex Smith walks on FedEx Field after injury
Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith took another big step in his recovery: Walking on FedEx Field.

Smith, who broke his leg 10 months ago in a gruesome injury during Week 11 of the 2018 NFL season, walked around the field prior to the Skins' 31-15 defeat to the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football.

The 35-year-old quarterback was walking without any crutches and it did not appear to be wearing any external brace, but seemed to have somewhat of a limb. Smith's recovery has been long, with several complications after multiple surgeries, an extended stay in the hospital and a long time wearing a bulky external fixator

When he was seen at Redskins training camp, Smith was still walking with crutches and had a large wrap on his right leg.

It remains highly unlikely Smith ever returns to the field to play in an NFL game, despite saying he still hopes to be able to play one day.
