Report: Jeff Bezos interested in buying an NFL team

Jeff Bezos, the wealthiest person on the planet, has an interest in buying an NFL franchise, according to a report from CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora Sunday.

While it is not huge news that a person worth tens of billions of dollars is interested in buying a pro football team and has become close with several owners, the story becomes a bit more interesting for local readers when you consider which team's owner Bezos has become close with: The Washington Redskins.
La Canfora reports one owner the Amazon founder (who is in the process of moving to the area) has become close with is Washington's Daniel Snyder.
While buying the Redskins from Snyder may not be feasible or something either person wants, Bezos could play a role in helping to secure the franchise a new stadium. The Redskins have struggled to secure the land for a new location to leave FedEx Field before their lease is up with the Landover ground in 2026. 
The Redskins have struggled to find a suitable site to build a new stadium and while the RFK Stadium site is a potential spot there is an added complication of it being on federal land. 
At the start of training camp, Redskins team president Bruce Allen said there was no news on where the Redskins would play football after FedEx Field or where they will build a new stadium, but said information may be coming soon.

“I would say within a year, that is the timetable we’re looking at,” Allen said on "The Larry O'Connor Show" on D.C.'s WMAL. “Our deadline for making a decision is really 2022 because our lease in Maryland ends in 2026.”

Of course, the Redskins may not be the target. Bezos, who has been Seattle-based for some time, could make a move for the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks are reportedly going to be up for sale in the near future following the death of owner Paul Allen in Oct. 2018. And following the death Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen in June, there have been several lawsuits and arguments among various heirs for control of that franchise, which could lead to a sale in the coming years as well.

Overall, owning an NFL franchise is an opportunity offered only to a select group of uber-wealthy individuals and with just 32 franchises, the chance to buy doesn't come along very often. And Bezos certainly has enough cash to do whatever he pleases.
