The defending Stanley Cup champions need to take back control of the series after letting a 2-0 series lead slip.

The defending Stanley Cup champions need to be more active in the forecheck and get more from their bottom lines.

The defending Stanley Cup champions need to score on the power play.

The defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals have done all the above through one period and have a 1-0 lead in Game 5.
After one period, this does not look like the same team that was blown away in Game 3 and undone by mental mistakes in Game 4.

The Caps have come out flying. Every line is getting the better of their matchup so far. Carolina's only zone time came on their abbreviated power play. Excellent first 10 minutes.

THIS is the kind of hard working shift the #Caps haven't had anywhere near enough of....65-20-10 are working their asses off to fight for the puck and generate time & cycle.

Phenomenal shifts by the 4th and 3rd lines in succession just gave the Caps a minute straight of zone time. Two really strong keeps by Jensen.

And in less than eight minutes of play, the Capitals converted a man-advantage opportunity with Nicklas Backstrom scoring his fourth of these Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Assists came from John Carlson and Tom Wilson, who has been very active in the early goings, as well.

Playing in front of an electric crowd at Capital One Arena, the Capitals have put some of the sluggishness they displayed in Carolina behind them.

Forty minutes stand between Washington and a 3-2 series lead and the team that has scored first has won every game of the series thus far.
