Hall: Gruden coaching for his Redskins future

Former Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall said the last five games of the season will mean a lot in determining Jay Gruden's future with the franchise on 106.7 The Fan Monday.

"You don't want to say he's coaching for his job, but yes, this game, this season means a lot for Jay," Hall told The Sports Junkies. "You just check the landscape of the league and see a guy like Mike McCarthy get fired, a guy who in 12 years been to nine playoffs, who has a Super Bowl ring, who groomed one of the best quarterbacks in the game right now."

Hall says the firing of McCarthy Sunday after the Packers 20-17 loss to the Cardinals at Lambeau Field shows how cutthroat the NFL can be and why no job, including Gruden's, is safe.

"Some guys are weird, some guys need a different voice, some guys need to be motivated," Hall said about how some coaches' message can become stale over time. This is Gruden's fifth season in Washington.

"I wouldn't say he's coaching for his life or for his job, but I do think it means a lot," Hall said, "because to have the kind of lead (the Redskins) had on this division and now to not be in first place, or not solely be in first place right now, and you having to win these last couple games do get in (to the playoffs), it's going to show you a lot what this coaching staff is about and what these guys in the locker room are about."
