The Junkies considered whether it’s fair to say the Redskins are botching their quarterback’s development after hiring a new play caller.
“The argument can be made Kevin O’Connell should be retained and we’ve made this argument because of continuity, and we saw some development from Haskins,” John-Paul Flaim said on 106.7 The Fan. “They’ve decided, and maybe he decided, not to go that route. Do you think they’re botching it in terms of Haskins’ development as a quarterback by making him go through a new system?”
While it might be more difficult for Haskins to transition to a new system initially, Eric Bickel said the move could be valuable as Haskins progresses.
“It’s hard to argue for an offense that was so bad and put up such putrid numbers,” Bickel said, “so anything different you could say is going to be an upgrade. It’s hard to argue it.”
John Auville similarly welcomed the change.
“You can’t be afraid to try new things when you’re 3-13,” Auville said. “And you can’t be scared (and say) ‘Oh, what if we lose the next Sean McVay?’ What if he’s the next hot assistant to leave the building? It’s a calculated risk.”
Jason Bishop said Redskins fans need to trust that Rivera knows what will be best for the soon-to-be second-year quarterback.
“I’m going to give the benefit of the doubt to the coach,” Bishop said on 106.7 The Fan Wednesday. “He trusts (Turner). He worked with him. He feels like he’s the best fit. We don’t know, by the way, how different the system’s going to be.”
It’s also unclear what O’Connell would have requested to stay, Auville said.
Nonetheless, it will now be up to Turner to develop Haskins and transform an offense that was 31st overall in 2019.
