Bryce Harper reportedly has terrible vision and stepped into the batter's box without his customary contacts in Game 1 on Saturday.
Naturally, he ripped an RBI single. Just add it to the Harper lore. But that isn't even the best part.
For good reason, Harper has worn contacts every day since being fitted for them in low-A ball. Without them, he was still one of the best hitting prospects in a generation. With them, he could "see in HD." Without them, his eye doctor asked how he had ever hit the baseball.
Fast forward to the bathroom on Saturday morning.
"I couldn't get my contacts in this morning," he said to MLB.com's Jamal Collier. "So I just wore those for the first at-bat and tried to get them the best I could the second at-bat, didn't get them in."
Stepping into the box for his second at-bat, Harper was back to the "standard definition" view, and that was apparently good enough. He knocked in his team's only run of the game.
Ironically, it was also his only hit on the day. Harper got his contacts back in before his third at-bat and batted normally for his final two hitless at-bats.
It's a small sample size, but as far as we know, Harper is batting 1.000 without contacts or glasses this season.
