The Washington Capitals are playing their first Stanley Cup Finals game at Capital One Arena since it was known as the MCI Center.
With both the game and the associated festivities shutting down all streets around the stadium, transportation was an issue for anyone coming to the game, and that includes the players.
So, T.J. Oshie and Matt Niskanen played the everyman and took the Metrorail to the game, swiping Metro cards and holding the bars alongside fans--even posing for a few selfies.
The many Caps fans on the train were cool about it, and didn’t bother them, but a bunch if fans did wish them good luck, and they looked very happy and relaxed. At Gallery Place, a metro worker joined them as they exited (they swiped their cards just like us) and they rode.
It's worth noting that Metro did have delays on the Red Line in the hours before the game, which just goes to show how risky it can be for players to rely on public transit. Regardless, everything worked out great in this game, and perhaps it will start a new trend for Caps players.
