The Washington Redskins had the unfortunate draw of playing the New Orleans Saints on the road, on Monday Night Football, on the night that Drew Brees was all but certain to break the all-time NFL passing record. He needed just more than 200 passing yards to accomplish the feat, leapfrogging both Brett Favre and Peyton Manning.
He did it all in the first half, passing both legendary quarterbacks on touchdown passes, two of four scored by the Saints in the first 30 minutes. He finished with 250 yards in the air.
The Saints added an additional 43 yards on the ground (and two Mark Ingram touchdowns), giving them nearly 300 yards of total offense in the first half.
Keep in mind that the Redskins had 15 days to prepare for this game and came in with the NFL's top-ranked total defense and passing defense. In addition to playing poorly, the Redskins also appeared to be ripping apart at the seams, playing out of position and yelling at each other on the sidelines. Here were some of the lowlights:
On that TD, Norman and Moreau both cheated up to the flat, nobody covering deep. pic.twitter.com/5thLkki73j
— Mark Bullock (@MarkBullockNFL) October 9, 2018Norman is playing an absolutely awful game. He came out trying to start a fight with Thomas, committed a stupid penalty and then just completely blew coverage.

— New Account (@ftbeard_17) October 9, 2018This is AFTER he got in Nicholson's face after the stupid penalty. He's right and this is really good to see, after some BAD by the #Redskins D in critical spots. 13 points that #Saints should not have. https://t.co/iVdRnuVBOr
— Chris Russell (@Russellmania621) October 9, 2018Norman is PISSED and has every right to be. One of the #Saints OL dove through the line and stuck his hand out to trip not only him but Zach Brown. That's not legal. It's also never going to be called.#Redskins trail 20-6.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) October 9, 2018Meanwhile, on offense, the Redskins managed to find the end zone right before halftime, but otherwise looked lost. They had just 157 yards of offense and 13 points in the first half.
The Redskins squandered a two-score lead over the Saints last year, so anything is possible. However, they have a tall mountain to climb in the second half.
