A key piece on the defensive line was locked up Thursday.
The Washington Redskins have agreed to a contract extension with defensive end Matt Ioannidis.
According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, Washington will sign Ioannidis to a three-year contract extension with a base value of $21.75 million with another $3 million in incentives.
106.7 The Fan Redskins reporter Craig Hoffman confirmed the deal and added, "Getting (the deal) done now is huge."
"(The Redskins) were gonna have to potentially let him walk if his market got out of control, which it may have with another big year. Now? Solid deal and he’s locked in," Hoffman tweeted.
Ioannidis, 25, recorded 7.5 sacks in 14 games for the Redskins in 2019, improving on his 4.5 sacks in 2017. After Washington selected him with the 152nd overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft (5th round) out of Temple, he has tallied 28 QB hits and 65 tackles in 38 games with the Skins.
When announcing the Ioannidis signing the Redskins also revelaed they signed quarterback Josh Woodrum.
Woodrum last played in the AAF with the Salt Lake Stallions, making him the latest Washington signing out of the now defucnt football league. The 26-year-old QB does have some NFL experience, spending time with the Giants, Colts, Bears, Bills, Ravens, and Browns organziations.
Matt Ioannidis has shown major improvement in each of his two offseasons in the league so far. Has become a disruptive defender and a pocket-pushing presence. Great job scouting, developing and re-signing him. This is how it's supposed to look. https://t.co/q6b5XJhDnf
