Professional football is returning to Washington D.C.

Well, the professional football in the second incarnation of the XFL, at least.

The D.C. franchise will play its home games at Audi Field when the league relaunches in 2020, according to The Washington Post. (The news was first reported by The Athletic's Pablo Maurer.)
Vince McMahon's revival will resume play with a 10-week season slated to begin in February 2020. This would mean there would be some overlap between the new XFL team and D.C. United, the current tenants of Audi Field.

Plenty of ?'s here, which will be answered soon. Am told that #DCU's priority, first and foremost, is keeping the field in pristine shape. Worth noting that the facility has a ton of off days and was always pitched as a multi-use facility - tenants like these were always expected

With a capacity of 20,000, Audi Field fits just 7,000 fewer fans than the StubHub Center, the temporary home of the NFL's Los Angeles Chargers.

McMahon's original incarnation created quite a lot of buzz, but fizzled out of business after one season in 2001.

The XFL will hold a press conference announcing the location of the league's eight franchisees Wednesday.

The Redskins played their final game in D.C. December 22, 1996 at RFK Stadium.
