Daniel Cormier knocked out Stipe Miocic to win the UFC heavyweight title Saturday night in Las Vegas.
Cormier, now a two-division champion (heavyweight and light heavyweight), is now in elite company of fighters to hold two titles simultaneously.
Cormier has only lost to one opponent in the UFC – to Jon Jones, twice, for the light heavyweight title – most recently in July 2017. The result of that bout – Jones defeating Cormier by third-round TKO – was later overturned, as Jones tested positive for a banned substance, and the title was returned to Cormier.
But Cormier (21-1) has never faced the mystical beast Brock Lesnar (5-3), whose UFC history has reached cultish acclaim despite so few fights, due in large part because of his elusive nature, bouncing between UFC and professional wrestling at whim, following his whirlwind ascent to UFC champion. With Lesnar sitting ringside for Cormier's post-fight celebration, their paths finally collided Saturday at UFC 226.
Cormier called out Lesnar: "There's a guy that I've known for a long time. He's a wrestler. He's an All-American. He's a former UFC champion. I never thought I would fight him. But Brock Lesnar, get your ass in here!"
Lesnar met Cormier with a hard two-handed shove at the center of the Octagon.
