Cam Newton set to become a free agent

The Carolina Panthers are expected to release quarterback Cam Newton on Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports, after failing to find a trade partner.

The Panthers gave Newton permission to seek a trade after signing Teddy Bridgewater to a three-year, $63 deal last week. Carolina also traded Kyle Allen – Newton's backup who played 13 games while Newton was out with a foot injury in 2019 – to the Redskins for a fifth-round pick on Monday.

We've reached a strange place in the NFL when Allen is worth more in trade value than Newton, a former MVP in 2015. But there's a reason for it.

Still, the Redskins won't be interested in Newton once he does become available, news ESPN's John Keim reported Monday before Washington traded for Allen.

"Although (Ron) Rivera drafted and coached Newton in Carolina, the Redskins know if they sign him, he would be coming here to start," Keim wrote. "And they don't want to put (Dwayne) Haskins in a position where he has no shot to compete for the job."
