RICHMOND – The Redskins closed camp in Richmond on Sunday with a full, padded practice at the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center. It was similar to many practices this week, which isn’t a good thing for one particular quarterback.
Simply put, McCoy had an awful week. Keenum hasn’t been eye-popping by any means, but McCoy’s lead not only shrank, but it also disappeared. I would go as far as to say he’s in a hole behind Keenum pending Thursday’s game against the Bengals. And some of this is health-related. He clearly doesn’t trust his leg and the continued reps seem to have taken a toll. The original plan called for rest every fourth day for McCoy. He wound up taking just one rest day in Richmond outside the scheduled off days.
Colt McCoy just walked off after his two minute drive. Not sure if he’s disgusted or hurt but a trainer was next to him and is still walking with him now.McCoy hasn’t looked right all week.
— Craig Hoffman (@CraigHoffman) August 11, 2019However, his decision making is what sunk him this week. He routinely threw into coverage. He missed open receivers. He was just bad. McCoy did have some bright moments, as one does over the course of the many reps of training camp. That included a good ball to rookie Terry McLaurin for a touchdown today. However, the thing that separated McCoy from the other quarterbacks was a working knowledge of the offense and if that doesn’t result in production it’s fairly useless. And Keenum is forever closing the knowledge gap.

— 106.7 The Fan (@1067theFan) August 11, 2019Haskins leaves camp clearly behind. There’s just way too many sacks. I wonder if the Redskins coaches knew what they knew now about the other two QBs, perhaps they would have tried to create a simplified version of the offense for Haskins to run and build on over time. It’s way too late now and this is probably the best thing for his short term development. (Disclaimer: This may be just a beat reporter's theory, I haven’t run it by coaches.) But there’s no way anyone thought the QB situation wouldn’t budge more than the few inches from McCoy to Keenum with neither laying claim to the job with any conviction coming out of Richmond.
And Guice’s message afterward was clear.
