May 1, 2020 Thompson famously teared up when the Redskins started 0-5 last fall, knowing full well Jay Gruden would be fired the next morning. The signing now reunites him with Gruden, who's now the offensive coordinator in Jacksonville.
Thompson has
shown strong loyalty to Gruden, who saved his career when he was cut during his sophomore season, Gruden's first season coaching the Redskins. It was Gruden who stashed Thompson, a fifth-round pick in 2013, on the practice squad that year, and who later made the call to bring him back before the end of the 2014 season.
While Thompson struggled to stay on the field the last few years, he solidified himself as a legitimate threat in the passing game during his seven seasons in Washington, catching 212 passes for 1,772 yards and 10 touchdowns. In total, he registered 2,966 yards from scrimmage with 15 touchdowns for the Redskins.
