Nicklas Backstrom found Alex Ovechkin for the game-winning goal with one minute and seven seconds left in regulation, to take a 2-1 series lead against Pittsburgh, Tuesday night.

On a two-on-one breakaway, Backstrom held off from passing to Ovechkin until he was nearly past Penguins goaltender Matt Murray. Ovechkin plinked the puck off the right post, and then, in an enthusiastic display of athleticism, tapped his own rebound into the net. It was the perfect shot, the dream scenario the Caps seem to chase with an infuriating degree of consistency.

RUSSELL: Frantic Finish Falls In Caps Favor

"When they got on that break and Backstrom is heading towards the goal, and I keep waiting for him to pass it, and he keeps holding onto it and not passing, and not passing, and then not shooting," EB said. "And then the brilliant pass late, and then Ovi had the wherewithal to two-time in or whatever you call that was unbelievable."

"But I kept waiting for Backy to either pass it or shoot it, and he did neither until the last millisecond," he said. "And it turned out brilliant."

"It obviously worked out," Cakes said, "but this has been a common thread for many years and I think a lot of Caps fans feel the same way, and I will vocalize it for them. Sometimes you get frustrated that they pass up open shots, or they over-pass. I'm sure there's a method to it, but sometimes you see guys like five feet away from the net and it's an extra pass."

Thank God somebody said it.
