Choose a job you love, you'll never have to work a day in your life, the old adage goes.
The same can be said of professional hockey players. But for Devante Smith-Pelly, that saying rings truer than most.
When Smith-Pelly joins Grant & Danny for his weekly 106.7 The Fan appearance, presented by F.H. Furr, the hosts will often ask him a series of non-hockey related questions in hopes of better familiarizing him with their radio audience on a more personal level.
"What was your first job," they asked Smith-Pelly this week.
"I've actually never had a job. Never," he answered. "I've never had a job."
DSP's upbringing didn't fit the course of a typical teenager. His professional journey began at 16 years old, playing in the Ontario Hockey League.
All these years later, at 26, DSP still hasn't had to 'work' a day in his life.
"I love doing this," he said. "It's just what I do, so I wouldn't consider that a job."
On another note, it's been three-and-a-half weeks since DSP committed to celebrate a goal on behalf of Grant & Danny. At the time of the agreement, it had only been three games since he'd last scored a goal; that scoreless streak now stands at 11 games.
"I haven't forgotten," Smith-Pelly said. "But I'm gonna blame you guys for this little bit of a cold streak I'm on right now."
