Washington Redskins quarterback Dwayne Haskins has reportedly sustained a high-ankle sprain.

Interim head coach Bill Callahan announced Haskins will be out for Week 17 Monday, ending his rookie campaign. Veteran QB Case Keenum, who entered the game in place of the injured rookie passer, will start the Redskins' season finale in Dallas against the Cowboys.

The No. 15 overall pick for the Redskins ends his rookie season after making seven starts and appearing in nine games. Haskins completed 119-203 passes (58.6 percent) for 1365 yards (6.7 yards per attempt) with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. He finishes with a 76.1 quarterback rating and a 26.8 QBR. The Redskins went 2-5 in his seven starts.

Overall, Callahan said he thought the rookie was making great progress in the last few weeks and called it "quite substantial."

"The start he had in the game (Sunday) was very impressive," Callahan said Monday. "Unfortunately, he didn't have a chance or the opportunity to finish that game. I thought he was getting hot. I thought that he had the great feel for the game, the right reads, he sped through the progressions well, he found the openings very easily. I thought the game came to him very naturally."

“I think just in the last few weeks he’s taken a great jump progressing through his reads a lot quicker and faster,” Callahan said. “His footwork and fundamentals have improved. And I think, anytime that you are the starter, your attention to detail rises to a certain level and it gets higher and it gets heightened. That’s what I felt about his play in the last few weeks. And you could see that across the field and on tape. You could see it in the building. So those are real positive traits going forward for him."

Haskins said after the game he tried to return to action but was overruled. "I tried to go back in, but he wouldn't let me," Haskins told the media after the Redskins' 41-35 overtime defeat.
"I evaluated Dwayne following his ankle injury and after reviewing the X-Rays and conducting a full examination, I did not clear him to return to game action," Redskins team physician Dr. Robin West said Sunday.

Callahan says Haskins took a huge jump the last few weeks. His reads got a lot better. He progressed a lot faster. He really took a leap.“Experience is invaluable.” He says that’s the biggest factor.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said this is the initial diagnosis and Haskins will get an MRI and other tests Monday to determine the severity of the injury. Haskins said he wanted to play in Week 17 after the game. “I want to play,” Haskins said Sunday. “If I can, I will."

Callahan said he hopes Haskins is able to resume football activities in “a couple weeks."

#Redskins QB Dwayne Haskins suffered a high-ankle sprain based on initial analysis, sources say, but he’ll get an MRI and other tests today be sure. He wants to play in the finale, but no indication yet on if he’ll be able to. He was 12 of 15 for 133 yards with 2 TDs pre-injury.

Dwayne Haskins is dealing with a high ankle sprain according to @Rapsheet. Status TBD. Obviously if he's banged up he should not play. Would have been really nice to see him against a solid Dallas defense playing a must-have game.

Haskins reportedly has high ankle sprain. That means Keenum will start versus Cowboys. The Redskins have seen what they need from Haskins.

Haskins was playing his best game of the season before he sustained the injury to his ankle on a sack in the first play of the second half. He finished with 133 yards passing and two touchdowns while completing 12 of 15 passes. In relief, Keenum went 16-for-22 for 158 yards and a touchdown to send the game to overtime.
